Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the U.S. She has worked as a media critic since 1995. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which includes videos and comments on the representation of women in pop cultural. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit educational site that explores female representations in popular cultural narratives is founded and is directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to dispel the myths of women that exist in pop culture, she has also been working with issues that relate to the harassing women targeted by the media and others on the internet. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. Apart from being a popular public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. As a university student Sarkeesian was interested in the issues surrounding gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. In 2009, the ebullient young woman was targeted by the Internet for starting a web featuring a series about gender and videogames. This attack didn't stop her, rather it strengthened the determination of feminist media critic. To honor the numerous achievements she's made for feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women in popular culture stories.
